FROM OUR PRESIDENT CONNIE COFFMAN:

In my last article, I told you that I was going in for a hip replacement at St. Vincent’s Charity and that I should be in recovery and up and around by the next article. Well, things were more complicated than I expected! I did have my hip replaced, but at the same time I had a fracture in my femur that needed to be done then too! As I write this article, it has been over one month and I’m still unable to bear weight on that foot! Therapy is moving along, but my 79-year-old body is not able to do a lot of the things I used to take for granted!

My upper body strength is weak because of 2 rotator cuff injuries that were rehabbed 20 years ago! And my left side has always been my stronger side, but the surgery I just had is on my left side!!

This Friday I will see my surgeon and, hopefully, the femur has healed enough so that I can bear weight on that side, and I hope that will give me more strength in my rehab sessions! The therapists are great and encourage me a lot, but I cannot get up from a sitting position to “stand” yet!! My husband and family have been here supporting me, but I don’t have the self- confidence I need.

I guess my message this month is 1) keep active, EXERCISE, and remember that 2) even though many people say hip surgery is easy, certain circumstances can prove that is not always true.

Thank you for your prayers and well wishes, and maybe I’ll see you all soon. Take advantage of all the classes we have at our center because you never know when you’ll hit a “roadblock”! Enjoy these lovely summer days and nights.

A Note From Chris:

Thank you to all that attended our First Annual Health Fair!  It was a good turnout!

The need for senior services is increasing: 22.4% of Lake County’s population is 60 years and older. By 2030 this group’s population share will increase to 33.9%, outnumbering youth 20 years and younger. The Lake County Senior Service levy will be on the November 7 ballot to maintain and protect senior services. I encourage each of you to take time to be educated about the senior services offered in Fairport Harbor and throughout Lake County with the levy funds.
